CBSE now conducts two board exams for Class 10 every year. Many parents in Jaipur have asked us what this means, whether their child should take both, and how it changes preparation. Here is a simple explanation.
How the two exams work
- First exam (February to March): compulsory for every Class 10 student.
- Second exam (May): optional. It is meant for students who want to improve their marks.
- Students who have passed can try to improve in up to three subjects from Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages.
- Internal assessment and practicals happen only once in the year; the second exam is for the theory paper.
- Both exams cover the full syllabus.
- The better score is used for the final result.
CBSE may update the rules and dates every year. Always check the latest circular on the official website, cbse.gov.in, or ask your school.
Should your child plan to take both?
Our advice is to prepare fully for the February exam as if it is the only one. The second exam is a safety net, not a second chance to start preparing. Students who take the first exam lightly usually find May even harder, because the summer break, Class 11 classes and the pressure of a repeat attempt all come together.
The second exam makes sense when a student was unwell, had one bad paper, or narrowly missed a target needed for a stream such as Science with Maths.
A plan for the year
- April to September: complete the syllabus with understanding and test every chapter.
- October to December: revision, previous years' questions and sample papers.
- January: pre-boards and timed full papers.
- February to March: main board exam.
- April to May (only if needed): focused practice for up to three subjects for the second exam, while Class 11 begins.
