How to Prepare for Half-Yearly Exams: A Simple 4-Week Plan

Four-week plan to prepare for half-yearly exams

Half-yearly exams are the best mid-way check before the final or board exams. A bad half-yearly is not a disaster, but a good one builds confidence for the rest of the year. Four weeks of steady work is enough if the time is used well.

Week 1: Make the list

  • Write down every chapter in the half-yearly syllabus for each subject.
  • Mark each chapter green (confident), yellow (need practice) or red (not clear).
  • Clear red chapters first. Ask teachers about anything still confusing.

Week 2: Practise the weak areas

  • Spend most of the time on yellow and red chapters.
  • Maths and Science: solve textbook exercises again, then extra questions.
  • SST and languages: make short notes and answer questions in writing, not only by reading.

Week 3: Test yourself

  • Solve one full paper per subject in exam time.
  • Check it honestly and note why marks were lost: concept, careless mistake, or time.
  • Revise the chapters where you lost the most marks.

Week 4: Revise and rest

  • Revise from your own short notes and mistake notebook, not the whole textbook.
  • Practise diagrams, maps and formulas once more.
  • Sleep at least seven to eight hours. Tired brains forget what they know.

How parents can help

  • Keep a fixed, quiet study time each day and keep phones away during it.
  • Ask what was revised today, not how many hours were studied.
  • After the results, talk calmly about what to improve.

At Potential Tutorial we run weekly tests through the year, so most students already know their weak topics before exam season. Read more about how regular tests improve marks.
