Which Stream After Class 10: PCM, PCB or Commerce?

Choosing a stream after Class 10 is one of the first big decisions in a student's life. It is also one that many families make in a hurry, based on what friends are doing or on Class 10 marks alone. Here is a calmer way to think about it.

Science with Maths (PCM)

• Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, plus English and an optional subject.
• Leads to: engineering (through JEE and other entrance exams), architecture, computer science, data science, defence, pure sciences, and many other courses.
• Suits students who: enjoy problem-solving and are comfortable with a lot of Maths.

Science with Biology (PCB)

• Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, plus English and an optional subject.
• Leads to: medicine and dentistry (through NEET), pharmacy, nursing, biotechnology, life sciences and allied health courses.
• Suits students who: are interested in living things and are ready for a lot of reading and memory work, along with Physics and Chemistry.

Some students take PCMB (all four) to keep both doors open. It is a heavy load and needs strong time management.

Commerce

• Subjects: Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, English, and Mathematics or Applied Mathematics.
• Leads to: CA, CS, CMA, B.Com, BBA, economics, finance, banking, and business.
• Suits students who: like numbers in a practical setting, business and money matters.

Five questions to help decide

• Which Class 9 and 10 subjects did your child enjoy, not just score in?
• Which careers interest them today, and what streams do those careers need?
• Are they comfortable with heavy Maths for two more years?
• Are they ready for an entrance exam alongside the boards?
• Have you spoken to people who actually work in those careers?
